Universal Tools at MassArt include the Digital Fabrication Labs, Documentation Room, Installation Room, Lighting Installation Room, Public Spaces, Sound Studio and Woodshop

Digital Fabrication Labs

FABLABS are communal spaces dedicated to supporting the creative process, developing problem-solving skills, and empowering the community through emerging technologies through the process of digital fabrication. The FABLABS consist of the UPLAB, BASELAB, and PCLAB. Learn more about the FABLABS at MassArt. Please stop by any of our spaces to talk with our staff about any questions.

Location: D122

Tools: 3D Printing, Wirebender

The UPLABs equipment is open to all students who attend workshops or are trained in a class. 3D printing times must be booked here and the wire bender here (you will have to create a new account if it is your first time).

Location: D009

Tools: Laser Cutter, Waterjet Cutter

The BASELAB is available to MassArt students and staff.

Laser Cutter

Guidelines for preparing files, as well as an introduction to the Laser Lab, images of cutting and engraving samples, and more, can be found here. You can book time to use the laser cutter here. (You will need to create a new account). If you have any questions or would like to book a training or laser use, please email lasercutter@massart.edu.

BASELAB Hours: 9:30AM - 4:30PM

Tools: Wacolm, Software

The PCLAB is available to MassArt students and staff. The PCLAB has all creative software available through MassArt, specifically 3d modeling software for use in the FABLABS.

PCLAB Hours: 7AM - 11PM


Documentation Room

The Documentation Room located in D317 serves as a space for students to photograph artwork. The room comes equipped with large paper backdrops in a variety of colors as well as LED lights on stands. A full list of resources can be found here. Additional equipment may be reserved from Tech Central.

To make a reservation please review the calendar and email Kyle Brock: kyle.brock@massart.edu with your preferred date and time. Reservation blocks are between 1 and 6 hours anytime the campus is open. The room is set up for self service, if you require assistance taking photos please note that in your email.

Requests are reviewed Monday-Friday (excluding holidays).  Please allow a 48 hour window for confirmation of your requested time. Once confirmed your ID will be authorized to open the door for the duration of the reservation.


Lighting Installation Room

Location: D307

Lighting Installation Rooms are minimally furnished, are painted entirely black and have 12 foot ceilings that support full hanging grids. They can also be used for documentation.

Public Spaces


Access hours: 7:00am - 11:45pm

There are many public spaces across campus reserved through the Office of College and Visiting Events, located On the 1st floor of the Design and Media Center in D111. These areas are available to students for art installations and other activities. Examples include, Courtyard, DMC Atrium, and the new outdoor podiums in front of the DMC. The public space use form can be found here.


Sound Studio

Location: D310

Located on the 3rd floor of the DMC, the Sound Studio is available to all MassArt students. First, the studio serves to teach classes on sound recording, composition and editing. Secondly, it serves students working on audio projects, scoring and other production in stereo or multiple surround sound formats.

Woodshop

Location: D002/D004

The Woodshop is located on the lower level of the DMC. The Studio Managers work diligently to make this state of the art facility a safe and efficient resource for everyone.

The Woodshop is available during scheduled hours to MassArt students who are currently enrolled in a course which uses the woodshop for class, or have successfully completed one of the following gateway courses: TBA/3DTD-201 Projects in Wood, EDAD-202 Methods and Materials,  EDAD-307 Furniture Design, or who have participated in a scheduled group training session.
