Class Descriptions

Classes are offered in the format indicated next to their title.

Winter 2024 Session 1 & 2

Session 1 (January 11 – 12, 2025):

Artist Sketchbooks
A sketchbook is an artist’s most important tool. It is a space to experiment, document, and explore your ideas. In this two day workshop, you will learn traditional bookbinding techniques while you craft a personalized sketchbook. Express your artistic vision by choosing your paper and designing your own cover, end pages, and spine.

Fashion Illustration
In this two day workshop, you will learn the principles of fashion illustration. These include figure proportions, drawing and coloring techniques. You will explore different drawing materials, how to draw different fabrics and develop your illustration style.

Illustration
Students are introduced to the major markets of illustration with a focus on narrative and advertising using a combination and variety of traditional mediums and experimental techniques.

Mixed Media
This two day workshop will explore the many ways artists combine media to communicate ideas and images. Looking at contemporary artists will inspire students to experiment with found objects, drawing, painting, and collage.

Observational Drawing
Expand your technical drawing skills in this fun and intensive workshop. Students work from life while exploring fundamental drawing techniques, including value, perspective, and line. Students have the opportunity to collaborate through group critiques and discussions.

Observational Drawing & Visual Thinking (online)
In this two day drawing workshop, students will strengthen their observational drawing skills and their personal artistic vision. Composition, line, balance, pattern, space and movement are all elements that will be explored through exercises and personal imagery.

Papermaking
This class explores methods of hand papermaking, with an emphasis on papermaking as a sustainable art medium. Students will use this exciting craft as an outlet for personal expression. They will learn to use a Mould & Deckle to form new sheets of handmade paper from recycled and shredded paper and found objects. Students will also explore techniques such as: hinging, laminating, embossing, windows, and more!

Printmaking
Experiment with a variety of printmaking techniques as you explore monotypes. You will be introduced to processes you can recreate at home, while also learning to use MassArt’s printmaking equipment.

Session 2 (February 18 – 19, 2025):

PROGRAM INFORMATION AND COST

Winter 2024 Program Fee: $205

Materials and supplies are not included in the program fee and are purchased by the participant. Assistance with supplies is available.

Session 1 payment is due in full by December 16, 2024.

Session 2 payment is due in full by January 20, 2025.

DROPPING & REFUND POLICY

Students will receive a full refund if the class is dropped by the dates listed below for each section.

Session 1: December 16, 2024

Session 2: January 20, 2025

Students who fail to notify MassArt Youth Programs of their registration cancellation in writing to k12@massart.edu prior to the specified dates will not be eligible for a refund.

Failure to pay the class fee by the payment deadline does not withdraw a student from the program. Students who do not pay the class fee, and who do not attend the class will still be charged. Students who drop their class after the deadline will be responsible for paying the class fee.
