After-School Studios
An online after-school art program for students in grades 9-12.
The After-School Studios program helps students in grades 9-12 develop skills and work habits for their future success. Weekly studio classes give students the opportunity to develop work for their portfolio and higher education. Come be a part of our vibrant online creative community!
Spring 2024 After-School Studios (Virtual)
March 11 – May 8, 2024
SCHEDULE
Classes are held weekly from 4:30pm- 7:30pm.
Start dates are dependent on the day of the week each class is held:
- Mondays: March 11 – May 6, no class April 15
- Tuesdays: March 12 – May 7, no class April 16
- Wednesdays: March 13 – May 8, no class April 17
Spring 2024 Registration Period: January 19 – February 16, 2024
For students in Grades 9-12, the After-School Studios program helps students increase both the inventive and expressive portions of their artistic portfolio. A variety of classes are offered in both fine art and design. Students may participate in one or multiple classes. Students develop skills and work habits in their studio(s) of choice which builds confidence in their artistic development. Prior experience is not necessary. Students from a variety of artistic backgrounds are welcome. The After-School Studios program offers insight into building a portfolio for higher education and the art school admissions process through a presentation with Admissions during the semester. One-on-one portfolio reviews with an Admissions Counselor are encouraged as well.
Virtual Learning
- To improve accessibility, After-School Studios classes are offered virtually. To participate, students will need access to a computer, laptop, or smartphone with video/camera capabilities, and a reliable internet connection.
Every studio will utilize Zoom for virtual meetings. Other applications and online web resources, such as Google Classroom and Discord, may be used to organize assignments and other class content at the instructor’s discretion.
Online studio offerings may include:
- Live presentations from faculty and check-ins each class
- Time for creative art making, both independently and in class
- Break out sessions in small groups
- One-on-one and group critiques with faculty
- Online resources such as virtual museum tours, TED Talks, external demo videos, “visiting” artists, virtual collaborations, etc.

Fashion Illustration with Julia Harrington | Mondays
Looking for a way to get into Fashion or advance your clothing illustration skills? In this class, students learn the principles of fashion illustration. These include figure proportions, drawing clothing, and coloring techniques. Explore different drawing materials, fabrics, and illustration styles.
Observational Drawing with Will Suglia | Mondays
This class offers high school students a unique opportunity to strengthen observational drawing skills and cultivate a personal point of view. Students explore traditional and innovative ways of rendering the observed world through a variety of styles and media.
Animation Toolkit with Camilo Cardenas and John Quirk | Tuesdays
In Animation Toolkit, students explore the fundamental principles of animated movement through the use of digital software. This class introduces students to the essentials of leading digital animation programs with which they experiment and explore the possibilities of this diverse and contemporary medium. Students gain a solid foundation in animation, resulting in unique and outstanding pieces for a college portfolio.
Character Design with Alex Alderete | Wednesdays
This class looks at character archetypes that are at the center of some of our favorite and well-known stories, and allows the artist to re-engage with them and the fantastic worlds they live in. Students create projects from concept, to model, to portfolio. This class explores re-imagined popular heroes and villains, making it an ideal experience for anyone creating comics or graphic novels, animated cartoons or video games.
Illustration with Amanda Godowski | Thursdays
Explore the multi-faceted field of illustration. In this class, students learn about effective tools and techniques for visual communication. Areas of study may include concept art, character design, editorial, and narrative illustration. Students are exposed to the wide range of styles and mediums used by professional illustrators.
Program Information And Cost
Fall After-School Studios Fee: $645 per class
Materials and supplies are not included in the program fee and are purchased by the participant. Assistance with supplies is available.
Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served and space available basis. Submission of a registration form does not guarantee enrollment in a class. If you submit a registration form and your preferred classes are full, you will be placed on the waiting list and notified as soon as possible if a space becomes available.
Scholarships are based on financial need and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to request a scholarship. To be considered, you will be asked to provide family financial information on the registration form (required).
MassArt reserves the right to cancel classes in the event of an insufficient number of registrations. Students will receive a full refund in the event that a classes is canceled for this reason. Classes with low enrollment will be canceled at least two weeks before the start of the program.
Students will receive a full refund if the class is dropped by February 19. Students who fail to notify MassArt Youth Programs of their registration cancellation in writing to k12@massart.edu by February 19 will not be eligible for a refund. Students who drop their class after the February 19 deadline will be responsible for paying the class fee.
