Our programs lead to initial licensure in Visual Art, with support for MTEL preparation and DESE licensing guidance.
Art Education Programs for Teacher Preparation – Initial Licensure
MassArt offers State-approved educator preparation programs at both baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate levels. Successful completion of one of the MassArt teacher preparation programs for the Initial license leads to MassArt’s submission of program endorsement for the Initial licensure in Visual Art (PK-8 or 5-12) to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)
The Art Education Department is no longer requiring MTEL to participate in the practicum or graduate from this program per DESE’s advisory, but students will still need to take and pass the MTELs to get licensed by DESE. The Art Education Department will continue to introduce the information, demystify the process, and encourage students to make use of MTEL preparation resources available through Art Education and the Academic Resource Center (ARC).
