Boston, MA — Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) Professional and Continuing Education and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Extended Studies today announced a new partnership designed to help artists and designers everywhere explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in creative practice.
Through this collaboration, MassArt and CalArts will cross-list courses in the new Creative AI: Responsible Innovation with Generative Tools Certificate, giving students from both institutions—and learners worldwide—flexible and affordable access to classes that examine AI as a tool for art and design.
The partnership debuts this fall with Getting Creative with AI (November 5 – December 10, 2025), a six-week, fully online course priced at $475. Additional courses launching in 2026 include:
- Creating With Generative AI: Power and Problems (Spring 2026)
- Co-creating With AI: Ethical Tools for Design Innovation (Spring 2026)
- Developing and Detecting Synthetic Identities With Generative AI (Summer 2026)
“Artists and designers are at the forefront of shaping how we understand and use emerging technologies like AI,” said Mariah Doren, Dean of Graduate and Professional Education at MassArt. “This partnership makes it possible for learners everywhere to experiment, create, and critically engage with these tools in ways that are both accessible and affordable.”
Evan Tapper, Dean of Extended Studies at CalArts, added, “At CalArts, we see the tremendous opportunity of AI tools for creative production. Partnering with MassArt allows us to reach more artists and designers with courses that balance imagination, experimentation, hands-on learning, and critical inquiry. Together, we’re preparing creative professionals for a rapidly evolving future.”
