Saturday Studios
Saturday morning art classes for students in grades 3-12.
Now in its 94th year, Saturday Studios offers students in grades 3-12 the opportunity to explore their creativity. The program also supports the development of MassArt undergraduate and graduate students as art educators. Saturday Studios are taught by Art Education Student Teachers, who are supervised by Art Education faculty.
Classes are open to all who are interested, from beginners to the emerging young artist. There are no prerequisites or portfolio reviews.

Classes are held weekly on Saturdays
9:30am – 11:45am (Grades 3 – 5)
9:30am – 12:00pm (Grades 6 – 12)
GRADES 3 – 5
Art Explorations
Explore ways of making art using a wide variety of media and materials that may include drawing, painting, printmaking, clay, and more. This class provides ample room for play while also introducing young artists to different and exciting approaches to artmaking.
GRADES 6 – 8
Studio Explorations
Through drawing, painting, collage, fibers, and more, students learn to observe and explore the world around them. They may adopt new styles of making and understand more about themselves as artists. Students will be exposed to work by contemporary artists working in a variety of media.
The Landscape and You
This class explores the elements of landscape art with a strong emphasis on enjoying the creative process. Through a variety of mediums that may include painting, drawing, and collage, students will refine their unique approaches to art-making while gaining an appreciation for the stylistic diversity of the landscape genre.
Comics and Characters
This studio class focuses on the art of sequential comics. Learn how to translate sketches into clear, dynamic and entertaining storylines. Focus on story structure and style, and find your own voice in the ever-changing world of comic art.
GRADES 9 – 12
Printmaking
This class explores a variety of printmaking techniques including monotypes, collagraphs, relief and intaglio printing. Students will gain familiarity with basic printmaking mediums & equipment and develop their images through experimentation in the printmaking process.
Printmaking provides a unique lens that will expand the way students view and create art.
The Art of the Sketchbook
In this course, students will each learn how to bind their own sketchbook, then spend the following weeks filling its pages. Students will learn the fundamentals of art, and will also be exposed to various mediums and techniques that may include relief printing, zine making, and collaging.
Figure Drawing
Students learn the fundamentals of figure drawing while exploring principles of value, contrast, line, texture, and shape. This class will look at traditional and contemporary works and techniques to help inform their work.
Sculpture
Students will explore a variety of approaches to creating three dimensional forms. An emphasis will be placed on methods and techniques as well as the construction of meaning. Materials may include clay, wood, wire, plastic, and found objects. This course will look toward historical and contemporary sculpture as reference tools and sources of inspiration.

Fall 2024 Program Fee: $200
Payment is due in full by September 30, 2024.
Dropping & Refund Policy
Students will receive a full refund if the class is dropped by October 1st. Students who fail to notify MassArt Youth Programs of their registration cancellation in writing to k12@massart.edu prior to this date, will not be eligible for a refund.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served and space available basis. Submission of a registration form does not guarantee enrollment in a class. If you submit a registration form and your preferred classes are full, you will be placed on the waiting list and notified as soon as possible if a space becomes available.
Scholarships are based on financial need and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to request a scholarship. To be considered, you will be asked to provide family financial information on the registration form (required).
MassArt reserves the right to cancel classes in the event of an insufficient number of registrations. Students will receive a full refund in the event that a classes is canceled for this reason. Classes with low enrollment will be canceled at least two weeks before the start of the program.
