MassArt BFA Art Education students may apply for an expedited Master’s program at the beginning of their last semester.
MassArt students who are earning their BFA in Art Education must apply to the MA program at the beginning of their last semester of courses (before the certification semester). Students who will finish their 120 credits in the Fall must apply by the September deadline. Students who will finish the 120 credits in the Spring must apply by the January deadline.

If accepted into the BFA/MA program, Art Education students graduate with their BFA at the end of the following Spring term with 120 credits.
Accepted candidates begin their graduate work in the summer that immediately follows their BFA graduation. As part of the 30-credit MA program, students complete Designing Curriculum, Artist Teacher Studio, and the 6-credit student teaching practicum during the MA program instead of during BFA program, to qualify for initial licensure in Massachusetts. After three years of teaching on the initial license, graduates may apply for a Massachusetts professional teaching license without further coursework.

Learning Outcomes
Students who complete the Art Education BFA/MA 4+1 program are expected to be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes.
- Appreciate the role of art practice at the center of quality art teaching and art learning, and and reinvigorate and enhance studio practices as members of the field of practicing, contemporary artists
- Apply art learning and teaching skills and attitudes in curriculum development, instruction, and assessment
- Refine their studio practices as contemporary artists;
- Understand the critical contexts of art education through lenses of the contemporary, the historical, and social justice
- Understand and participate in presentation practices (professional practice) and out-of-classroom roles as educational leaders within and beyond their schools and districts
