Sustainability

Climate change and social impact call for bold, creative responses. At MassArt, sustainability is an active, collaborative effort across disciplines.

MassArt’s Sustainability Initiative empowers artists and designers to address urgent global challenges through creative practice. Students engage in interdisciplinary approaches that connect environmental responsibility, social justice, and material innovation. Through coursework, events, and hands-on projects, sustainability is embedded across disciplines—expanding how artists and designers think, make, and lead. From studio to community, students develop the skills to imagine and build a more just and resilient future. Graduates are prepared to address complex challenges and apply sustainable strategies within their creative work.

 

Minor

Through your course work in the COF Sustainability Minor you will be guided to develop fundamental interdisciplinary and collaborative skills necessary to address complex sustainability issues.

About Sustainability at MassArt

MassArt integrates sustainability across curriculum, research, and campus operations. Faculty embed sustainable practices into coursework—from regenerative design to circular fashion and environmental advocacy. The Sustainability Initiative supports a growing Minor, public programming, and interdisciplinary collaboration, positioning MassArt as a leader in sustainable art and design education.

A standing committee of faculty, staff, and students, we meet regularly on Wednesdays between 1:30 and 3 PM. Email sustainable@massart.edu for details. We invite you to attend and learn about our activities.

Many Ways to Engage

Sustainability at MassArt is collaborative, flexible, and student-driven. You can:

  • Declare the Sustainability Minor
  • Take sustainability-focused courses across disciplines (search by “Sustainability Content” in the course catalog)
  • Join or start a student-led green group, such as the ReStore
  • Attend lectures, workshops, and events hosted across departments
  • Participate in the Sustainability in the Curriculum Committee (students, staff, and faculty welcome)
  • Take part in the annual Global Teach-In on Climate and Justice—attend, collaborate, or lead a session

However you choose to engage, there are many entry points—and room to shape your own path.
