On the sunny side with artist and alumnus Andy Li

A person in a white cap and dark sweater stands thoughtfully in a colorful room adorned with sunny side hues and vibrant, hand-painted signs—artwork by artist Andy Li—including one that reads LET ME BECOME A REASONABLE FOOD.

On a bright afternoon late last week, Andy Li, BFA ’12, busied himself at his sewing machine in his Cambridge studio, prepping for the biggest show of his life. If he was sweating the pressure, he didn’t show it. As sunny as the day outside, Li’s bright demeanor seemed to suggest he couldn’t if he tried. “I’m a glass half full kind of guy,” he laughed, perhaps selling himself short. Li’s cup perpetually overfloweth, as Boston is soon to discover.

Li is one of three Boston-based artists to be featured at the Charlestown Navy Yard as part of the Boston Public Art Triennial, a brand-new citywide affair set to launch officially on Thursday. His project is called “Today is The Day,” and it sounds a note of perpetual optimism in trying times.”

“Jewelry is similar to cars,” said Heather White, a jewelry designer, metalsmith and professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. “Both require constant maintenance and special storage.”

“If two pieces of metal rub against each other, it increases surface scratches,” said Emily Cobb, jewelry designer, metalsmith and instructor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

“Body lotion and soaps can build up in a gemstone’s setting,” said Cobb. “It can get caked in and dull the shine. A simple cleaning goes a long way — and if at all possible, take off your jewelry before the shower.”
