Michael Joyce is a practicing architect, urban designer, and educator. His long association with Mass Art includes positions both in the departments Illustration and Architectural Design. His professional and design interests run across the disciplines of architecture, urban design, and art which he often develops in a synthesis of exploration in his work. In his recent role with Stantec Architecture, he leads design collaborations across the multi-discipline firm and is frequent presenter in the Stantec Design Excellence program.

Michael received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art and holds a Masters in Architecture from MIT. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a registered architect in Massachusetts. His built work includes a variety of large-scale projects from award winning higher education, and courthouse design to sophisticated science research centers, community welcome centers, college sports facilities and transportation centers. Michael’s work abroad includes residency in the United Kingdom and Germany and he has collaborated on projects in Israel, India and Japan.

His design for the Western New York Welcome Center was recently awarded the AIA Honor Award at the Rochester NY AIA chapter. His approach to architecture is a union of collaboration and the celebration of design excellence with clients, colleagues, and the public realm. Michael is involved in active education and professional committees including the MIT Alumni Club, Temple University Family Council and the Boston Society of Architects.

At Massart Michael adds his expertise in design through a range of scales starting with urban design and planning to buildings – to details as a connected set of decisions. His courses include “Making Cities Work” that examines how cities support public spaces and reinforce open use and diverse human activity, and the craft and vision in architectural detailing. These are instrinsically connected supporting the larger scales of city design, at the same time as the hand sized details of a building, lighting, and materiality. Grounded in the large vision of place-making, his work points to the interconnectivity of design thinking and range of influences and ideas that make up an architectural education.
