In her monthly conversation with The Culture Show host Jared Bowen, MassArt President Mary Grant reflected on the role of higher education—and particularly art and design schools—in preparing thoughtful citizens and sustaining civic dialogue.

The discussion explored recent research showing that students overwhelmingly value free expression while also seeking environments that support their well-being. President Grant emphasized the responsibility of colleges to create conditions where constructive debate and emotional safety go hand in hand.

She also highlighted the unique contributions of art and design education, which invite us to see the world from new perspectives, to listen more closely, and to imagine possibilities that move us beyond division.

MassArt is grateful to Jared Bowen and our colleagues at GBH for highlighting the essential connection between higher education, the arts, and civic life.

Listen to President Grant’s segment beginning at 39:00.
