Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) offer a simple and flexible way to support MassArt while providing immediate tax benefits. However, IRS regulations limit how these funds can be used.

Key Restrictions:

  • No Personal Benefit: Gifts from a DAF cannot be used if you receive anything in return, such as tickets, meals, or other benefits.
  • No Pledge Payments: DAFs cannot be used to pay personal pledges, as this would constitute a financial obligation. However, they can support non-binding intentions of giving.

How This Affects Your Giving:

  • You cannot use a DAF to buy tickets or sponsorships for events like the MassArt Auction or Fashion Show Party because these include benefits that are not fully tax-deductible.
  • MassArt Foundation cannot accept DAF payments for personal pledges, ensuring compliance with IRS rules.

When you recommend a grant to MassArt, we must confirm with your fund manager that the gift meets all tax-deductibility requirements. Improper use of DAFs can result in IRS penalties, including a 125% excise tax on donorsand a 10% excise tax on fund managers.
