Judith Leemann is an artist, educator, and writer committed to tending the material, formal, and social conditions needed for sustained collective study. Her work arises from inquiry in the studio and classroom and is anchored by a decades-long collaboration with the Boston-based Design Studio for Social Intervention, where she currently serves as Ecologies of Thought Lead. In 2017, she convened the retooling critique working group at MassArt to examine studio critique’s relation to educational equity.

Leemann’s writings have been included in the anthologies Beyond Critique (Bloomsbury, 2017), Collaboration Through Craft (Bloomsbury, 2013), and The Object of Labor: Art, Cloth, and Cultural Production (School of the Art Institute of Chicago and MIT Press 2007). Recent projects include enter, the symptom, a performance commissioned as part of the 2019 exhibition goat island archive, we have discovered the performance by making it at the Chicago Cultural Center and arvenis, of the field 2017 at Proof Gallery in Boston.

Leemann is Professor in the Fine Arts 3D department at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
