Visiting Artists

Visiting artists of diverse backgrounds frequently join the MassArt community for a few days, weeks, or months. Through lectures, slide talks, gallery walkthroughs, symposia, and residencies, these artists share their perspectives on practicing their chosen craft.

Visits often coincide with exhibitions of artists' work, granting MassArt students the unique opportunity to participate in mounting professional installations. While some visits are intimately tied to curricula, others are designed to fill a gap or broaden the student experience.

Photography Lecture Series: Stephen Shore

Stephen Shore's work has been widely published and exhibited for the past forty-five years. He was the first living photographer to have a one-man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since Alfred Stieglitz, forty years earlier.

Gregory Halpern

Photography Lecture Series: Gregory Halpern

Gregory Halpern has exhibited internationally and published four books of photographs, including Confederate Moons (TBW, 2018), ZZYZX (Mack, 2016), A (J&L Books, 2011) and Omaha Sketchbook (J&L Books limited edition, 2009).

Makeda Best

Photography Lecture Series: Makeda Best

Makeda Best is the Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography at the Harvard Art Museums. Forthcoming publications include a book on the Civil War era photography, an essay on photography and incarceration, and an article on class and labor in nineteenth century American photography.

Sam Contis

Photography Lecture Series: Sam Contis

Sam Contis lives and works in California. Her work has been shown internationally with recent exhibitions in Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Antwerp, and London, and solo shows at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive and Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery in New York.
