Library Workshops

The library has an active and varied instruction program. Faculty are invited to schedule one or more of our sessions for their courses. These typically last an hour and take place in the library. We offer the following session types:

Research Workshop

Tailored to your course. Students do hands-on research on pre-selected topics with guidance from a librarian. The librarian provides a tutorial on the online catalog and select databases and then works with students to find relevant books, full-text articles, images, etc. Additional topics that may be covered include evaluating information from the web and citing sources.

Artists' Books Presentation

Students are introduced to selections from the library's collection of artists' books. The collection includes works by Ed Ruscha, Robert Rauschenberg, Kara Walker, Ai Weiwei, and many others.

Color Theory Presentation

An introduction to the influential color system of Albert Munsell, former MassArt faculty member, through a set of devices designed by him. Students also learn about the theories of Josef Albers while examining some of the large silkscreen plates from his Interaction of Color.

Copyright for Artists

A workshop that deals with the ethics and legality of appropriating art. Students learn about copyright law, fair use, and Creative Commons licensing.

Introduction to WordPress

This session shows students how to set up and manage a WordPress website using blogs.massart.edu.

Poster Presentation

The library has a large collection of posters from the 1970s to now, many with political themes. In addition to viewing the posters, students reflect on what makes an effective graphic statement.

Graphic Novels Presentation

An overview of MassArt's rapidly growing collection of comics and graphic novels.
