Ekua Holms’ painting: Golden, 2009. Courtesy Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Artist and activist Ekua Holmes has turned her talented hand to children's book illustration in recent years, with her vivid collages adorning the pages of important books by notable authors. The pioneering and world-renowned art museum on the east coast of the United States has collected more than 40 of her illustrations, along with a selection of portraits and scenes of city life and offers them through an impressive exhibition to its visitors. The powerful, multi-layered collages of mixed media, which suggest complexity beneath the simple stories they represent, embody the power, dignity, and justice that powers often deny to black Americans.
