FAQs For Summer 2020 Online Classes

Registration

    • A. Registration for Summer 2020 online courses will be available during the following dates:

      - Creative Studios: May 20th - June 24th
      - Summer Intensives: May 20th - July 1st
      - Pre-College Summer Studios: May 20th - July 8th

      Please check the individual program pages for a list of available classes.
    • A. To register for an online class in one of our summer programs, please submit an online registration form. The registration form can be found at the top of the Creative Studios, Summer Intensives, or Pre-College Summer Studios program page, under “Schedule”.

      We recommend checking the program page prior to registering to see which classes have availability. The registration form is programmed to show available classes only. If your preferred class(es) are full, you will have the option to sign up for the waiting list or register for a different class. You may sign up for as many waiting lists as you would like, but please register for one class only.

      After you submit your registration form, you will receive an automatic email (sent to the Parent/Guardian email listed on your form) confirming your space in the class. We will aim to enroll your student in 2-3 weeks, at which time we will send you a welcome letter and payment link via email.

      Please note: It may take longer than 2-3 weeks to receive your welcome packet and payment link, since your student must first be enrolled in our system of records. This is a manual process, which may lead to some delays. Your student’s space in the program is secure during this time. We appreciate your patience.
    • A. Please send us an email at k12@massart.edu with the following information: Student first and last name, the student’s program, the class the student was enrolled in, and the new class the student would like to register for. We will check the class’s availability, and will re-register your student if space is available. You will not need to submit a new registration form.

      The deadline to let us know if your student would like to register for a different class is May 15th. After that time, we will not be able to hold your student’s space in the program.
    • A. Students will be registered from the waiting list as spaces become available. Course capacity has not changed for many of the classes now offered online. If a space opens up, we will notify you as soon as possible.
    • A. Please send us an email at k12@massart.edu with the following information: Student first and last name, program, and class.

      For students who were enrolled in a class prior to courses moving online, the deadline to notify us of your cancellation and receive a full refund is May 15th. After this date, any cancellations will be subject to the cancellation/refund policy as stated on the website.
    • A. Welcome packets and payment links are emailed approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting a registration form. Orientation packets are emailed approximately three weeks before the start of the program.

      Please note: It may take longer than 2-3 weeks to receive your welcome packet and payment link, since your student must first be enrolled in our system of records. This is a manual process, which may lead to some delays. Your student’s space in the program is secure during this time. We appreciate your patience.

Financial

    • A. Program fees can be found on the Creative Studios, Summer Intensives, or Pre-College Summer Studios program page, under “Program Information and Cost.” A $100 non-refundable deposit must be sent upon enrollment confirmation (emailed approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting a registration form).
    • A. As part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The MassArt Board of Trustees and President of the College have approved a 10% price reduction. The updated program fees can be found on the Creative Studios, Summer Intensives, or Pre-College Summer Studios program page, under "Program Information and Cost."
    • A. You will be emailed a secure payment link with instructions approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting your registration form. A $100 non-refundable deposit is due upon receiving the payment link. Full payment (including deposit) is due one week prior to the start of the program. MassArt accepts Visa and Mastercard for online payments.

      Please be aware that single payments cannot exceed $3,000. If your balance is greater than $3,000, please wait 24 hours before making a second payment.

      At this time, we are only able to accept payments made online via credit or debit card. Due to the closure of the MassArt campus, we are unable to accept and deposit payments made via check or money order. We apologize for any inconvenience.
    • A. You can make a partial or full payment, as long as the program fee is paid in full one week before the start of the program. Please be aware that single payments cannot exceed $3,000. If your balance is greater than $3,000, please wait 24 hours before making a second payment.
    • A. Full program cost, less the deposit, will be refunded if the request to drop is received in writing to thek12@massart.edu email one week prior to the start of the program.* If the request to cancel is received after this date, you will be responsible for the balance due. MassArt reserves the right to cancel courses in the event of an insufficient number of registrations. You will receive a full refund in the event that a course is cancelled for this reason.

      * One month for Pre-College Summer Studios
    • A. If you plan to cancel your registration due to classes moving online, you must notify us by May 15th to receive a full refund. If you notify us after May 15th, your refund will be subject to the cancellation/refund policy as stated on the website.
    • A. It typically takes about three weeks to receive your refund if you paid by credit or debit card, or four weeks if you paid by check or money order.

      Please keep in mind that our Business Office is experiencing a higher volume of refund requests at this time, which may lead to some delays. If your class or registration was cancelled and you have not received your refund after four weeks, please feel free to reach out to us at k12@massart.edu.
    • A. MassArt Youth Programs awards a limited number of partial scholarships for students in need of assistance. Scholarships are based on financial need and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

      To request a scholarship for Summer 2020, please email us at k12@massart.edu by May 30th with the following information: Student first and last name, program, a copy of your most recent tax return (SSNs removed), and a short statement about why you are requesting financial assistance.

      While we would like to support every student who applies for financial assistance, please understand that our funding is limited and only covers a portion of program fees. We are unable to accept new scholarship requests after May 30th.
       
    • A. To request assistance with purchasing materials, please email us at k12@massart.edu with the following information: Student first and last name, program, class, and a short statement about why you are requesting support.

Course Content

    • A. Please visit the Creative Studios, Summer Intensives, or Pre-College Summer Studios program page for a list of courses that will be offered online. The course descriptions have been updated to address how the class will run in the new online environment.

      Course availability will be updated on an ongoing basis as classes reach capacity.
    • A. Online studio offerings will include:
      - Live presentations from faculty and daily check-ins
      - Time for creative art making, both independently and in class
      - Break out sessions in small groups
      - One-on-one and group critiques with faculty
      - Online resources such as virtual museum tours, TED Talks, external demo videos, “visiting” artists, virtual collaborations, etc.

      Every studio will utilize Zoom and Google Classroom. Zoom will be used for virtual meetings, and Google Classroom will be used to organize assignments and other class content.
    • A. The class schedule can be found at the top of the Creative Studios, Summer Intensives, or Pre-College Summer Studios program page, under “Schedule.” Each class period meets for 3.5 hours. Students who are signed up for a full day of class will receive an hour lunch break.
    • A. While classes will meet virtually, there will be time built into each class period for independent work. During this time, you will not need to be on your computer - draw, paint, sculpt, maybe even go outside for some fresh air! We also encourage you to take breaks and grab snacks as needed.
    • A. Students will need a computer or smartphone, preferably with video capability, and reliable internet connection in order to participate in online classes. Every online class will also utilize Zoom and Google Classroom. Zoom will be used for virtual meetings, and Google Classroom will be used to organize assignments and other class content.

      Your instructor may choose to incorporate additional programs, software, or applications that are relevant to the course material, or to encourage class discussion. Any programs that require a subscription (i.e. Adobe Creative Suite) will be included in the supply list sent with the orientation packet. Otherwise, programs will be discussed on the first day of class.
    • A. Students will be required to purchase materials to participate in online courses. A list of materials will be sent in the orientation packet three weeks prior to the start of the program. If you are enrolled in a course that requires a specialized kit, it will be sent in the mail to the student address listed on your registration form, prior to the first class.

      If you are unable to purchase materials due to financial constraints, please email us at k12@massart.edu to request support. Please include student name, program, class, and a short statement about why you are requesting support.
    • A. Faculty in summer Youth Programs are both professional artists working in their chosen medium, as well as educators teaching at MassArt and other regional colleges and high schools.

      As in all Youth Programs classes, faculty teaching online classes will guide young artists in understanding core and fundamental skills and developing studio practices. Please visit our faculty bio page to learn more.
    • A. A commitment to attend all classes is expected. Students with more than three (3) absences, as well as students who miss the first day of class, will be removed from the program. Students removed from the program due to inconsistent attendance will not be eligible for a refund, and will be responsible for any unpaid balances. Any planned absences must be communicated with the designated staff contact (provided in your orientation packet) ahead of time.

      This policy applies to both in-person and online courses.
