FAQs For Fall 2020 Online Classes

Table of Contents

Registration

    • A. To register for a Youth Programs class, please submit an online registration form during the open registration period. The registration form can be found at the top of the program page, under “Schedule.” The registration dates will be posted there as well.

We recommend checking the “Course Descriptions” section of the program page prior to registering to see which classes have availability. The registration form is programmed to show available classes only. If your preferred class(es) are full, you will have the option to sign up for the waiting list or register for a different class. You may sign up for as many waiting lists as you would like. Due to limited capacity, please register for only the class or classes you intend to participate in.
    • A. After you submit your registration form, you will receive an automatic email (sent to the Parent/Guardian email listed on your form) confirming your registration. We will aim to enroll your student in 2-3 weeks. After your student has been enrolled, you will receive a welcome letter and payment link via email.

Please note: It may take longer than 2-3 weeks to receive your welcome packet and payment link, since your student must first be enrolled in our system of records. This is a manual process, which may lead to some delays. Your student’s space in the program is secure during this time. We appreciate your patience.
    • A. Welcome letters and payment links are emailed approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting a registration form. Orientation packets are emailed approximately three weeks before the start of the program.

This is a manual process, which may lead to some delays. Your student’s space in the program is secure during this time. We appreciate your patience.
    • A. The orientation packet includes a program information sheet, details about the virtual orientation, a supply list, instructions for accessing your class online, and contact info for attendance updates (absences, early dismissal, late arrival).

Financial

    • A. Program fees can be found on the program page, under “Program Information and Cost.” Please be aware that some programs require a $100 non-refundable deposit. Payments are due in full one week prior to the start of the program.
    • A. A secure payment link will be emailed to the Parent/Guardian email listed on your registration form approximately 2-3 weeks after registering. This email will include your balance, Student ID #, and instructions for making a payment online via Paybill.

Full payment (including a $100 non-refundable deposit, if applicable) is due one week prior to the start of the program. MassArt accepts Visa and Mastercard for online payments. A confirmation of your payment will be sent immediately to the email address you provide on PayBill. Please keep in mind that it could take up to two business days to process all electronic payments.
PayBill only allows one transaction per credit card in a 24 hour period. Additionally, single payments cannot exceed $3,000. If your balance is greater than $3,000, please wait 24 hours before making a second payment.
At this time, we are only able to accept payments made online via credit or debit card. As most of our administrative staff are working remotely, we are unable to accept and deposit payments made via check or money order. We apologize for any inconvenience.
    • A. If you are unsure of your balance after receiving your payment link (emailed approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting a registration form), please reach out to us at k12@massart.edu.

Bills for unpaid balances will be sent from MassArt’s Business Office after the start of the program, along with instructions for making a payment.
    • A. You can make a partial or full payment, as long as the program fee is paid in full one week before the start of the program. Please be aware that single payments cannot exceed $3,000. If your balance is greater than $3,000, please wait 24 hours before making a second payment.
    • A. Full program cost, less the deposit, will be refunded if the request to drop is received in writing to the k12@massart.edu email one week prior to the start of the program. If the request to cancel is received after this date, you will be responsible for the balance due. MassArt reserves the right to cancel courses in the event of an insufficient number of registrations. You will receive a full refund in the event that a course is cancelled for this reason.
Please note: It is extremely important that you let us know in writing if you will be cancelling your registration, even if you have not submitted a payment for the program. This is the only way we will know whether you intend to cancel your registration. By letting us know ahead of time, this also ensures that another student can participate in the program as many classes have a waiting list.

    • A. It typically takes about three weeks to receive your refund if you paid by credit or debit card, or four weeks if you paid by check or money order.

Please keep in mind that our Business Office is working remotely at this time, which may lead to some delays. If your class or registration was cancelled and you have not received your refund after four weeks, please feel free to reach out to us at k12@massart.edu.
    • A. MassArt Youth Programs awards a limited number of partial scholarships for students in need of assistance. Scholarships are based on financial need and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to request a scholarship. To be considered, you will be asked to provide family financial information on the registration form (required).
You will receive confirmation of your scholarship request along with your welcome email, approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting a registration form.
    • A. Students who are awarded a scholarship will have the opportunity to request assistance with materials on their Scholarship Acceptance Form. The Scholarship Acceptance Form will be sent along with the welcome letter, approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting a registration form.

Course Content for Virtual Classes

    • A. Please visit the program page and navigate to the “Course Descriptions” section, toward the bottom of the page. The course descriptions have been updated to address how the classes will run in the new virtual environment.
Course availability will be updated on an ongoing basis as classes reach capacity.
    • A. Online studio offerings typically include the following, but will be adapted or modified for each grade range as appropriate:
      • • Live presentations from faculty and check-ins each class
      • • Time for creative art making, both independently and in class
      • • Break out sessions in small groups
      • • One-on-one and group critiques with faculty
      • • Online resources such as virtual museum tours, TED Talks, external demo videos, “visiting” artists, virtual collaborations, among other activities.

Every studio will utilize Zoom and Google Classroom. Zoom will be used for virtual meetings, and Google Classroom will be used to organize assignments and other class content.
Class schedules will vary from day to day, but will start and end with a Zoom meeting. Instructors will discuss class expectations at the start of the program, and will provide a more detailed schedule for the day at the beginning of each class.

    • A. The class schedule can be found at the top of the program page, under “Schedule.” Depending on the grade range, classes typically meet for 1.5 to 3 hours.
    • A. While classes meet virtually, there will typically be time built into each class period for independent work. During this time, you will not need to be on your computer - draw, paint, sculpt, maybe even go outside for some fresh air! Your instructor will still be available for check-ins as needed during independent work time.

We also encourage you to take breaks and grab snacks as needed.
    • A. Students will need a computer or smartphone, preferably with video capability, and reliable internet connection in order to participate in virtual classes. Every class will also utilize Zoom and Google Classroom. Zoom will be used for virtual meetings, and Google Classroom will be used to organize assignments and other class content.

Your instructor may choose to incorporate additional programs, software, or applications that are relevant to the course material, or to encourage class discussion. Any programs that require a subscription (i.e. Adobe Creative Suite) will be included in the supply list sent with the orientation packet. Otherwise, programs will be discussed on the first day of class.
    • A. Students will be required to purchase materials to participate in virtual courses (materials not included in the program fee). A list of materials will be sent in the orientation packet three weeks prior to the start of the program. Materials typically cost $50-$100 per class, depending on the program.
    • A. Faculty in fall Youth Programs are both professional artists working in their chosen medium, as well as educators teaching at MassArt and other regional colleges and high schools.

Saturday Studios classes are taught by MassArt students majoring in Art Education and supervised by MassArt Art Education faculty.
As in all Youth Programs classes, faculty teaching online classes will guide young artists in understanding core and fundamental skills and developing studio practices. Please visit our faculty bio page to learn more.
    • A. A commitment to attend all classes is expected. Attendance will be taken in the first 15 minutes of class.

Students with more than three (3) absences, as well as students who miss the first day of class, will be removed from the program. Students removed from the program due to inconsistent attendance will not be eligible for a refund, and will be responsible for any unpaid balances. Any planned absences must be communicated with the designated staff contact (provided in the orientation packet) ahead of time.
This policy applies to both in-person and virtual courses.
